Learn about suicide prevention research

AFSP was founded in 1987 by survivors of suicide loss and researchers as a research organization dedicated to understanding suicide and identifying evidence-informed strategies to help save lives. Thanks to our donors, in addition to serving as a catalyst for innovative and impactful research, we are the largest private funder of suicide prevention research, shaping suicide prevention strategies around the world.

Our Strategy for Impact

Fund innovative new research

through our research grants program

Build a research community

by recruiting, training, and guiding researchers

Share our findings

with the public to help create a culture that’s smart about mental health

AFSP-Funded Research Grants

Much of what is known about suicide comes from studies that AFSP has funded. Our studies open up new areas of inquiry, and our council of scientific advisers helps set the national research agenda.
