Utah suicide prevention plans and initiatives
In 2013, Utah law required the Utah Department of Health and Human Services’ Division of Substance Use and Mental Health (SUMH) to appoint a state suicide prevention coordinator to administer a state suicide prevention program composed of suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention programs, services, and efforts (§ 62A-15-1101). To carry out these requirements, SUMH collaborates with the Utah Suicide Prevention Coalition (USPC), a statewide public-private partnership focused on promoting education and providing resources around suicide and mental health. Since then, Utah has provided consistent state funding for implementation of prevention efforts, including an annual line item for suicide prevention in the state budget. In 2021, USPC published the Utah Suicide Prevention Plan: 2022-2026, which it will be responsible for implementing with oversight from DSAHM. Additionally, in 2020 the Utah LGBTQ Suicide Prevention Plan: 2020-2023 was developed and released by the USPC LGBTQ+ workgroup and endorsed by the Utah Pride Center.
